Ebook About 'Wonderfully dark, extremely funny' proclaimed ADAM KAY, author of the No.1 bestselling This is Going to Hurt'A filmic romp with great characters, a jet-propelled plot, and a winning premise' said the GUARDIANJASON MANFORD thinks it's 'Hilarious. You'll never look at Manchester the same way again.'The Chronicles of St Mary's series author JODI TAYLOR declared 'I loved this . . . great premise - great story - great characters . . . hugely enjoyable.'And THE TIMES called it 'ripping entertainment from start to finish.'There are dark forces at work in our world (and in Manchester in particular), so thank God The Stranger Times is on hand to report them . . . A weekly newspaper dedicated to the weird and the wonderful (but mostly the weird), it is the go-to publication for the unexplained and inexplicable. At least that's their pitch. The reality is rather less auspicious. Their editor is a drunken, foul-tempered and foul-mouthed husk of a man who thinks little of the publication he edits. His staff are a ragtag group of misfits. And as for the assistant editor . . . well, that job is a revolving door - and it has just revolved to reveal Hannah Willis, who's got problems of her own. When tragedy strikes in her first week on the job The Stranger Times is forced to do some serious investigating. What they discover leads to a shocking realisation: some of the stories they'd previously dismissed as nonsense are in fact terrifyingly real. Soon they come face-to-face with darker forces than they could ever have imagined. The Stranger Times is the first novel from C.K. McDonnell, the pen name of Caimh McDonnell. It combines his distinctive dark wit with his love of the weird and wonderful to deliver a joyous celebration of how truth really can be stranger than fiction.Readers love The Stranger Times:***** 'A delight from start to finish - laugh out loud funny yet with plenty of thrills.'***** 'Full of wit and humour, and knows how to keep the reader hooked.'***** 'You'll soon fall in love . . . fans of Pratchett, Gaiman, Aaronovich will be blown away.'Book The Stranger Times: A dark and hilarious escapist read for fans of Terry Pratchett Review :
For all the Caimh McDonnell fans and acolytes it is not a typical story. It is however another bit of masterful story telling from the White Haired Irishman. Starting off slow this tale builds momentum like a Clydesdale on a race track. Halfway through I was already feeling a kinship with characters still in the midst of their development. Follow the characters as they come to terms with the strange and unusual world that is right at the corners of our reality. True to my initial statement this book hits a homerun from title page to copyright. Its hard to corner this book for genre type casting so I won't even begin to. I guarantee there is something for almost everyone here.Note to C.K McDonnellI think the your fan base should have a name. Mind you, I have thought of a few but I keep coming back to the Kevins. I mean this in a non gendered always plural even in the singular way. Just imagine Elaine comes up and says"The Kevins from the Ladies Auxiliary of Cornwall want you to come for another reading and book signing. Should we notify the constabulary ahead of time so they can have armed response at the ready in case there is a repeat of last year?" Or maybe your agent tells you the Royal Arms Hotel will no longer host live Bunny Book Clubs because The Kevins have killed their prized ornamental coy by turning the pond into one large White Russian and turned the fountain at the entrance into continuous Captain Morgan dispensing cherub. Then the postman leaves a note on your door that reads:Dear Caimh,You and the Misses are lovely people but every time I have a package from a Kevins that is cumbersome and hurling stick shaped it is in want of being signed by you. Why for the love all that's holy is it wrapped in old used fish and chip paper? Dealing with stray dogs was bad enough but now I've got the bloody cats, rats and birds after me too!Deeply Concerned,Paddy The PostmanI can say I would proudly call myself a Kevins. So play around with for a day or two and see how it fits. Also things to consider are code words and secret hand shakes. McDonnell doesn't disappoint in this new book. Fans of the Bunny McGarry novels will delight in both the suspense and hilarity that were featured."The Stranger Times" follows Hannah Drinkwater - no- Willis, who has to reinvent herself following an ugly divorce. Reinvention is no stranger at the Times, she discovers, as she meets the unusual crew of colleagues who put out this weekly of the weird. As you might imagine, encounters with cops, drunkards, louts, smart-assed adolescents, and all manner of furry things pepper this book liberally. There might even have been (shh) a touching moment or two.My only complaint is about the Kindle format, and I couldn't find a place to message just the publisher -- between certain chapters, articles from the "actual" Stranger Times appear, and some glitch means that you cannot flip to or past those pages without changing your font to single page, small type font. For those of us with challenged eyesight, that was a bit frustrating -- and I had to do a little digging on Amazon to find out how to get around not being able to get past a certain page (originally, I thought the book hadn't downloaded properly). So if you have the same problem, adjust your font size down.Cheers to McDonnell. I can't wait for the next "edition!"
