As they come together in a clash of anger, mistrust, and potent, unwanted desire, Will and Cheyenne must put aside their differences and navigate the endgame of a woman for whom nothing was taboo…A steamy thriller with characters you won't forget…romantic suspense at its best.★★★★★"Isn’t it wonderful, as a reader, to pick up a book you are skeptical of and find yourself in the hands of an expert lover of words?" ★★★★★"Gripping. Dark. Beautiful."Book The Bequest (Book One of The Guardians Series): A Romantic Suspense Novel Review :
This is a difficult review to write. I do not know who is the intended audience is. The mystery and suspense is very good. However it is very slow moving to the point of boredom. About a third of the book if not more is dedicated to the thoughts of the two main adult characters. Very little action. The vicious things that happened to the three main characters are not what I expect to find in a romance. The horrible things that happened to Cheyenne are in her past but they are hard to read. This book is about how people are able to triumph and lead happy lives even if the worst things imaginable happen. I struggled through to the end but skipped large portions of it. There is a difference between an entertaining romance and a well-written romance. A book can be one without the other. It’s when a book is both that it becomes gold. The Bequest by Hope Anika is beyond gold. It is platinum. I had low expectations for it because of the cover. The cover needed….well….a new cover. Then I read the first paragraph. Then I stopped and blinked. And I went back and re-read it again. And then I smiled. It was startlingly beautifully written.Isn’t it wonderful, as a reader, to pick up a book you are skeptical of and find yourself in the hands of an expert lover of words? I don’t have any doubt the author is a lover of words, because she uses some beautifully complex phrasing. Many times I found myself pausing while reading the story, just…savoring her phrasing. Not something I often do. This book was a serious pleasure to read just based off unique writing style alone. But the story made it AMAZING! Cheyenne is a hardened, tough girl who has been through absolute hell in life but has finally settled into a safe, solitary life producing art in the mountains. That safe, solitary life is yanked out from under her when she gets an unexpected inheritance from a former friend – a ten year old boy struggling to survive a life that seems bent on destroying him. Will was a loyal seal team leader until a terrible betrayal darkened his life and he turned hard and cynical. These two are brought together in a tale of vengeance, violence, hope, and searing hot sexiness. There were a couple aspects of this plot I was worried about after I read the blurb and before I read the book. All too often romance writers try to write a tough, feisty female lead and end up with a bitch. That didn’t happen here. On the contrary, Cheyenne is a genuinely nice person, she just isn’t going to take any crap off anyone. Her reactions in high stress, volatile situations are the exact reactions anyone would have if they had grown up like she had.Another thing I worried about was the book being too cliché. Badass seal rescues girl who needs it, they fall in love, happily ever after. But this book never felt cliché or trite. I was way too into it to ever think “this may be cliché”. So while on the surface it may SEEM cliché, trust me, in practice it’s not. The characters are too real, too developed. The character progression is too flawless. The pacing, the action – it all keeps it together. Usually the mention of nuclear weapons in a romance draws at LEAST a mental eye roll from me. It never gave me a seconds pause in this book. It is just too well written, and well written stories can never be cliché.This book has been safely tucked into my “re-read” section on my kindle. I don’t give five star reviews to romances often, though I do adore reading them. But this was hands down a five star book. From the skillful use of wordcraft to the delicious plot to the fully fleshed characters, this is well worth a buy despite the cover.Written for and posted first on The Romance Reviews.com.
